Today I went for swim in the morning and at about 8am I had the pool to myself – warm sun and warm water and massage showers all to myself! Surrounded by these amazing mountains which I have become so used to, it is easy to live here in a bubble and to forget about what is going on in the world outside of Olafsfjordur! But it is also possible to engage with the solitude of being out in the midst of the valleys while on long walks – and to begin to grasp the enormity of the planet we live on, both in terms of physical area and of geological time. How lucky to have been able to spend some weeks here… and now that it is drawing to a close, I know I will really miss it.
The rest of the day was spent having time out – some of us went to the gallery of outsider art just outside Akyreyri – and what a wonderful place it is!
Loads of interesting collections – of dolls, quirky stuff, outsider art by individuals, and work from local children – all housed in a set of interesting spaces with loads of books and colour all around.
an inspiring place indeed – and the day was rounded off with a visit to the local restaurant for fish and chips with all of us present. Good people good company good fish n chips.
